NARI Study Says Kitchen Remodeling to Remain Robust in 2014

Kitchens will remain hot remodeling priorities in homes across the United States throughout 2014, according to the Member Profile Study done by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Kitchen remodels remain a top priority for 82 percent of NARI members, according to the study, released for National Home Improvement Month in May, which also estimates home remodeling projects will total $73 million in 2014.

According to NARI members, consumers looking to remodel their kitchens are selecting open space concepts that are both comfortable and practical, with kitchen islands remaining a popular trend. Improving the overall look and feel of the kitchen was most often cited as the main motivating factor by homeowners for remodeling.

Other popular trends listed in the study included mixing different wood tones and finishes to create a custom kitchen look; built-in accent cabinets to house china or other kitchen utensils; wine storage, such as integrated wine coolers and dedicated “butler” areas for entertaining, sampling and sharing wine; and more decorative task lighting features instead of additional upper cabinetry.

Home remodeling can pay off at selling time if you pick the right project

There is no doubt that taking a beater house down to the wallboards for a complete remodel is worth doing. Flipping houses this way is highly profitable for those that do it for a living.

But what about updating a single bathroom or that landscape lighting you installed? Will you see your money back when the sale sign goes up?

Kermit Baker, director of the remodeling futures program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, says it depends on the project.

Adding square footage to a family room or master bedroom fares well at resale time. Pools and home offices, not so much.

Sal Alfano, editorial director of Remodeling magazine, says payback peaked in 2005 and has been eroding ever since.

The magazine’s 2013 Cost vs. Value Report says that replacement projects, like updating existing kitchens or baths, do better than discretionary remodeling projects such as pools, home theaters and such.

Consider your neighborhood. A $100,000 kitchen may not net you a $100,000 return if the neighborhood home prices won’t support it. More than anything, remodel to enhance your home life.
